SEO-Basics
let's take for instance, an under 17 football academy. Often times visitors come around to scout/ search for the best/optimal player but for this purpose we shall limit it to seasons.

Imagine:
1. The football academy to be the search engine e.g google, yahoo, bing etc
2. The players to be individual websites/webpages.
3. The visitors/searchers to be web visitors (i.e you and I).
4. The Keyword "Best/Optimal player" .

For a player to be recommended as the best, he has to get to the top in terms of "ranking" or at least top 3 but how does he attain that?
He works harder than the other players which automatically gets him the appraisal ( if it was possible, you could literally see the word "Best/optimal Player" written all over him).
In this context SEO is the hardwork the player had to put in. It isn't exactly a hardwork lol, you just have to know the right measures, really. Lol

What is Search Engine?
This is one of the most important tools that help you find information on the web. They have huge databases which use their own internal algorithm to decide which webpages to display when someone enters a keyword or key phrase.

How does SEO work?
There are various steps which will be stated to show you how SEO works in order to provide the site visitors optimal results;

(i) Crawling:
This is the process of fetching all the web pages linked to a website. This task is performed by a software called CRAWLER or SPIDER, GOOGLE BOT in case of google.

(ii) Indexing:
This is the process of creating index for all the fetched web pages and keeping them into a giant database from where it can later be retrieved. In other words, indexing is identifying the words and expressions that best describes the page and assigning the page to particular keywords.

(iii) Processing:
When a search request comes, the search engine processes it by comparing the search string in the search request with the indexed pages in the database.

(iv) Calculating Relevancy:
To a search engine, relevance means more than finding a page with the right words using indexes of the webpages.
Search engine typically assumes that the more popular a site, page or document, the more valuable the information it contains must be.

How??
Popularity and Relevance aren't determined manually instead the engines employ mathematical equations (Algorithms) to sort "the wheat from the chaff (relevance) and then to rank the wheat in order of quality (popularity).

(v) Retrieving Results:
Typically a result is given at the end.

SEO Ranking "Highly"
When I talk about ranking "highly", I basically mean that your site shows up at least within the first 2 pages of Google listings (preferably the first page) for that keyword or phrase, since most people don’t look beyond that in the search results.

When you first start out, you will not immediately appear on the first pages, unless you’re in a very non-competitive niche, but in a relatively short period of time after implementing these techniques, you should see your placement start to rise and your traffic accordingly.

Categorization of SEO techniques
SEO techniques can be categorized in two which will be stated and explained below;
(a) ON-PAGE OPTIMIZATION: This simply refers to all the various techniques that you can implement on your webpages and have direct control over.

(i) Domain Name: This involves incorporating the main keyword in the domain name.

(ii) URL Selection: This involves incorporating the main keyword in your company's domain name. E.g  Bluesnakerock.com/free-audio-and-video.html

(iii) Alt tags: Some search robots cannot read images but some do read the "alt".
E.g <img src="???"  alt="search engine tags and meta tags" height="??" Width="??" />

(iv) Meta tags: These are piece of descriptive html codes that are found at the head tag of a webpage and includes the elements; title, description and Keywords. E.g <meta name="Keywords " content="computer, training, IT, IT training ">
note: you can use 5-7keywords.

(v) Title tags: Title tags for your page are the most crucial features of SEO. It is viewable to human, it tells both the human and search engine what the site is all about.
Note: Title page should be customized for each specific page. e.g <title> free rock music audio and video | the snake rock band</title>

(vi) Webpage content: Your keywords should be included in the title tag, URL of the page, first paragraph and if possible a couple more times in the rest of the content.
Note: you don't have to over do it else you get flagged for spamming.

(viii) Filenames: Also include the name if your brand, genre, company in naming your files. E.g "Blue-snake-rock-girls-are-cool.mp3"
Important note: Make sure to hyphens for separating your words.

Why??
When you enter this "girlsarecool" the search engine reads it exactly how you entered it and funny enough noone searches for information with joint words but when you enter your words like this "girls-are-cool" the search engine reads it as individual words. That means, which ever word the visitors use be girls, are, cool, your site have the tendency of making the google search list.

(ix) WORDPRESS & BLOG PERMALINKS
If you are using Wordpress as your CMS (content management system), or are running a blog on it, you should take the following steps to optimize your URLs, also known in the blogosphere as Permalinks. Permalink is just another name for the specific URL assigned to each blog post or page you publish.
The default format of a blog post/page URL in Wordpress is to use an id number, so that your URL will look something like: Yourdomain.com/blog/?p=203

This doesn’t tell the search engines much. So here’s what you do (before you go ahead to try anything, make sure to have studied well about it):
Go to the Settings screen from your dashboard, then go to the Permalinks section.

Check the button next to “Custom Structure” and in the text field, type: /%postname%/
This will automatically use the title of your post as the Permalink. Eg. Yourdomain.com/this-is-my-first-blog-post This is a much more search engine friendly URL.

***You can also manually edit the permalink for each post when you are writing or editing a post or page – the permalink will appear right underneath the title and you can edit it as you choose. (If you are using slightly older versions of Wordpress, the permalink is called Post Slug, but functions the same way) Ideally you would implement this customization from day 1 of your blog, but what should you do if your blog is already established and you’ve been using the default format up till now and have pages and posts with those funky-looking URLs?

If you change the default naming structure midway through, what will happen is that your old links will no longer work – so if someone has linked to a post on your blog using the old URL, anyone following that link will end up at a dead page – not good. You have a couple of options.
If your blog is not that old, or doesn’t have any incoming links, you can go ahead and change the default setting with little or no problem.

(b) OFF-PAGE OPTIMIZATION: This refers to ways to improve your site and ranking that involves a third party.
Technique(s) classified under off page optimization are stated and explained below:

Backlinks: These are simply links from other websites back to your own site. This can be an entire marketing strategy in itself. The idea is that in addition to the content of your site, search engines look at who you are associated with- which and how many sites are linking to you. This means your site looks better in their eyes.

How to Backlink:
1. Swapping links with sites and blogs is one good way to get backlinks and increased traffic.

2. Utilizing social networking sites e.g MySpace,YouTube e.tc is another way to get backlinks and traffic.
